Chandelier in a living room or hallway: size and ceiling height

In the living room, the hall and the entrance, people walk under the chandelier. That makes the ceiling height the deciding measurement. Here are the rules of thumb, and a calculator that works it out for your room.

200 cm (6 ft 7 in) is usual where people walk underneath. Over a coffee table, a sofa or somewhere nobody walks, you can set it lower.

Recommended chandelier heightThe height of the chandelier itself, without rods and chain.

How the chandelier hangs

The chandelier hangs from rods and chain, and you decide how long it is. The chain can be shortened link by link or removed altogether, and the ceiling cup covers the hook. The shortest total height is the lamp's own height plus 15 cm (6 in).

  • Chandelier with 48 clear glass tubes hung close to the ceiling on the lower rod only

    Lower rod only

    Lamp height + 15 cm (6 in)

All the chain is removed and the lower rod hangs straight from the hook. The chandelier sits close to the ceiling, almost like a flush mount. Good for lower ceilings.

  • Drop glass chandelier hung on the lower rod and chain below a ceiling rose

    Lower rod and chain

    Lamp height + 15 cm (6 in) + chain

The chain hangs between the hook and the lower rod. You adjust the length link by link.

  • Drop glass chandelier with a gold frame hung on two rods with chain between

    Two rods with chain between

Lamp height + 34 cm (13 in) or more

One rod at the top, one at the bottom and chain in between. This gives the classic chandelier look. With a single chain link it is about 34 cm (13 in) from the ceiling to the top of the lamp.

Ceiling height and lamp height

With 200 cm (6 ft 7 in) of free height beneath the chandelier. Lamp height is the height without chain, as shown on the product page. It also needs at least 15 cm (6 in) for the suspension.

With a 250 cm (8 ft 2 in) ceiling there is only 50 cm (20 in) for chandelier and suspension. That is not enough for our chandeliers where people walk underneath. Hang it over a table or a sofa instead.

Hallways and stairwells with high ceilings

In an entrance hall or stairwell with a high ceiling, the chandelier can hang lower and be seen from several floors. The 200 cm (6 ft 7 in) rule applies from the floor or the step directly beneath it.

An example: with a 3.2 m (10 ft 6 in) ceiling there is 120 cm (47 in) for chandelier and suspension. That fits models up to 105 cm (41 in) tall, such as 75 Clear Drop Glass (height 95 cm) or 78 Clear Tube Glass (height 90 cm).

In a stairwell over several floors, measure from the step beneath the chandelier. A longer chain can be ordered.

Over a coffee table, sofa or dining table

If the chandelier hangs over a table, a sofa or in a corner where nobody walks, the 200 cm rule does not apply. It can hang lower and bring the light to where you sit.

Over a dining table, keep the bottom 75–90 cm (30–36 in) above the tabletop. See our guide to chandeliers over a dining table.
