Chandelier over a dining table: size and height

Two measurements decide almost everything: the width of the table and the distance from the tabletop up to the chandelier. Here are the rules of thumb, and a calculator that works it out for your room.

How the chandelier hangs

The chandelier hangs from rods and chain, and you decide how long it is. The chain can be shortened link by link or removed altogether, and the ceiling cup covers the hook. The shortest total height is the lamp's own height plus 15 cm (6 in).

  • Chandelier with 48 clear glass tubes hung close to the ceiling on the lower rod only

    Lower rod only

    Lamp height + 15 cm (6 in)

All the chain is removed and the lower rod hangs straight from the hook. The chandelier sits close to the ceiling, almost like a flush mount. Good for lower ceilings.

  • Drop glass chandelier hung on the lower rod and chain below a ceiling rose

    Lower rod and chain

    Lamp height + 15 cm (6 in) + chain

The chain hangs between the hook and the lower rod. You adjust the length link by link.

  • Drop glass chandelier with a gold frame hung on two rods with chain between

    Two rods with chain between

Lamp height + 34 cm (13 in) or more

One rod at the top, one at the bottom and chain in between. This gives the classic chandelier look. With a single chain link it is about 34 cm (13 in) from the ceiling to the top of the lamp.

Table width and diameter

The width of the table sets the diameter. The length decides whether you need one chandelier or two. For a round table, use the table's diameter.

Ceiling height and hanging height

The bottom of the chandelier should sit 75–90 cm (30–36 in) above the tabletop. With a higher ceiling, move it up a little so it does not feel low in the room.

360 cm (11 ft 10 in) 100–115 cm (39–45 in)170–185 cm (67–73 in)

Assumes a dining table 75 cm (29.5 in) high. Most are 73–76 cm (29–30 in). The chain can be shortened or removed, so the shortest the chandelier can hang is the lamp's own height plus 15 cm (6 in). A longer chain can be ordered.

Long tables: one chandelier or two?

One chandelier suits most tables up to about 2 m (6.5 ft). If the table is longer than 2.2 m (7 ft 3 in), two chandeliers often look better.

Hang them so each sits centred over its half of the table. The distance between them is then half the table length. Choose the diameter by the table width, and keep each chandelier at least 15 cm (6 in) from the end of the table.

For an oval table, use the shorter side as the width.

Glass and light

Clear glass lets through the most light and gives a lively play of light over the table. Alabaster, frosted and smoked glass soften the light for a calmer mood.

The models on this page work with a dimmer. Over a dining table it is worth it: full light while you set the table, softer light once you sit down. Choose warm white bulbs, around 2700 K.
